Aerobics / Dance Project
Purpose of Activity:For students to work in groups to create original dances or learn aerobic routines.
Prerequisites:Previous practice of some dance and aerobic routines and moves.
Suggested Grade Level:8
Materials Needed:CD/Tape player, anything else the students need as a result of their designed routines.
Essential Question: Would you consider Dance and Aerobics the same thing? Why or Why not?
Objectives: Students will discover movement patterns that express information about the basic systems, organs, and processes of the human body. They will work alone, and in small groups to make movement choices that communicate scientific concepts in creative movement. They will make inquiries, through research and movement experimentation, into the ways in which the body's systems work and how those systems interact.

Assignment: You will be working on an aerobics/dance project. In groups of 4 or 5, you will be creating a line dance or learning an aerobics routine.

#1: Line dance-You need to create a line dance, of your own. You may take steps from other dances and combine them into your own dance, but the dance has to be a new dance created from your minds.
These are the requirements for the dance project:
#2 Aerobics Segment that you learn: This will be a 3:47-minute segment of an aerobics routine. You will learn the dance routine Chocolate Dance (choco choco).
Requirements for aerobics segment:
Each member will fill out a group-evaluation sheet. If someone has not adequately contributed to the project, this will let me know so that I may assign grades accordingly.

- Create a name for your dance: the more creative, the better
- Create a dance that can be continuously danced for an entire song
- Put your dance to music; determine a specific song that the dance accompanies (I will need to approve the song before you present this to the class)
- Present your dance in front of the class to your desired selection of music
- Break the dance down into parts and teach the class your dance
- Finally, create a fictitious origin for the dance-this must be at least two written pages in length. In this paper, I want you to discuss where the dance came from, who invented it and how they invented it, and any changes it has undergone.
- 2-page written fictitious explanation of the dance's origin (very specific and creative) and the specific muscles that it works
- Paper listing the name of the dance, the group members. The actual dance written down (steps and counts), and each person's specific contribution to the project
- Steps of the Line Dance - 10 points
- Presentation to class - 10 points
- Participation of group members - 10 points
- Teaching the Dance to the class- 10 points
- Paper explaining the dance - 10 points
#2 Aerobics Segment that you learn: This will be a 3:47-minute segment of an aerobics routine. You will learn the dance routine Chocolate Dance (choco choco).
Requirements for aerobics segment:
- Must learn the entire segment of the Chocolate (Choco Choco) dance routine
- Each member must adequately participate in the project
- You may use the video to practice
- Create a different name for your workout as if you would have your own video
- Break the aerobic routine down into parts and teach the class
- Presentation - You must explain the focus of the routine. You must also present the segment to the class. You, as a group, will walk around to make sure everyone is doing the routine correctly.
- Names of all members in the group
- Focus of the routine (what does it work on?)
- Specific muscles that it works
- Actual written version of the routine
- Safety precautions necessary for the routine
- Steps of the aerobic routine - 10 points
- Presentation to class - 10 points
- Participation of group members - 10 points
- Teaching the aerobic routine to the class- 10 points
- Paper explaining the aerobic routine - 10 points
